Dear author/artist (Jukebox-fest)
Dear Jukebox author/artist,
First of all, thanks so much for writing/art-ing for me! Please take everything I write here as guidelines or suggestions, not demands. I'm pretty excited to get a fanwork for these songs at all, everything else is a bonus. I don't want writing/art-ing for me to be stressful, so please create something you enjoy making!
Also, I would be equally happy to get something for any of these requests. I've written more for some than others, but please don't take it as lack of enthusiasm if we matched on one with less info! I'm excited about every one of the songs/videos I requested.
General info
Fic
-- My fic preferences lean heavily towards gen (e.g. I really love friendships, worldbuilding/emphasis on the setting, family fic, found families, character studies, etc). That doesn't mean I dislike shippy fic, though -- I've mentioned some potential ships I would be interested in seeing explored under the specific songs.
-- That said, my main DNW is explicit sexual content. I'm totally fine with sex happening in the fic (as long as the characters aren't underage), but I'd prefer a fade to black.
-- I love all different types of atmosphere in what I read. Eg I love creepy/unsettling/scary fic, depressing fic, adorable/fluffy fic, angsty fic, etc etc etc.
-- I love fic with supernatural and/or sci fi elements, and I also love fic that's set squarely in the real world. Some of the songs I've requested seem to lean more heavily towards one or the other, but I have no problem if you prefer to take the opposite approach.
-- I'm totally fine with violence (sometimes the story is incomplete without it!), as long as it's not really OTT gory. I realise that's pretty vague :-/ if you're writing something with violence and can't figure out how gory to be, I wrote a Hunger Games AU of Friends recently -- that might help you get an idea of the level of violence I'm fine with? Like… I can read/write that kind of thing no problem, but I won't watch Game of Thrones. I hope that's a helpful benchmark!
Art
-- I don't have much with which to guide you for things like art styles I'm into, etc. Do what works best/comes easiest to you! But to help give you some guidance, with each song for which I've requested art, I'll say what I like about it in a way that should hopefully give you a good starting point (like I'll include particular images that really appeal to me). Please don't feel bound to that though. If something else in the song really grabs you, run with that!
-- DNWs are the same as for fic: no porn, and no gore. I have a muuuch higher tolerance for violence in fic than I do in visual media, so it's probably safer for me to say a general no to violence for art (I'm forever traumatized by Goya's Saturn Devouring His Son).
--(Though "creepy" and "gory" are very different things. A big ol' yes to creepy art! Ghosts! Shadows that do their own thing! Haunted houses! Living paintings! Woo!)
Specific songs/videos
All the Rowboats - Regina Spektor (Song) [fic or art]
All the galleries and museums
Here's your ticket, welcome to the tombs
They're just public mausoleums
The living dead fill every room
I really love the idea of a museum being haunted by the pieces that live in it, and that there's a part of them that's desperate to be free. I love the visual of the rowboat painting being locked forever in this scene of turmoil, and the violins forgetting how to do what they were originally made to do. The idea of artworks etc being alive, in a sense, has always kind of enthralled me and I'd love anything that played with this idea. The song focuses more on the art gallery side of things, but I'd be equally interested in other objects that the song doesn't mention, like dinosaur fossils or intricate period clothing or regular everyday objects used by ancient societies, or anything at all that gets put on display and observed rather than used! Or maybe you could explore whether the experiences of the pieces in a large public museum/gallery are different to the experience of, say, a smaller regional museum/gallery or someone's private collection. Perhaps it's smaller and friendlier? Perhaps it's worse? Or perhaps rather than being gazed at by museum visitors, they're examined and/or tested by researchers. How do they cope with that?
Florida - Patty Griffin (Song) [fic or art]
Slide down into the sea
Twelve hours on your feet
Get the tide to wash you away
For thousands and thousands of days
I adore this song, and I'd be so happy to get any fic or art for it at all, ever. I'd love anything based off any part of this song, but I'm going to go into some more detailed gushing in case that's helpful for you, author/artist -- but remember that these are suggestions and not demands!!
The lyrics I've quoted above have always been among my favourite images -- all the lyrics transcripts I've seen (including the CD booklet) say that it's "slide down into the seat", instead of sea, but I've always heard it as sea and I'm really attached to that image! Someone sinking into the ocean, exhausted, after a twelve hour day waiting tables and then repeating this for yeeaaaarrrrrsss.
It starts off so hopeful/naive, with the two girls driving along together (i love close female friendships), but it builds into something so melancholy and lonely.
I also really love the image in the line "summer comes marching in with its heavy boots on / kicking along the blacktop sidewalks of A1A". Feel absolutely free to interpret this differently, but I've also always understood "the night" sections to be referring to the POV character's progressive attitude towards her romantic partner(s) as she grows older:
"The night wants to kiss you deep and be on his way / pretend he don't know you very next day"
"The night never owed you nothing anyway / makes promises that he never intends to keep everyday"
"You want the night just to let you sleep and be on his way / wrap you up in some cool sheets and have nothing to say"
So… in summary, I would love fic or art about any part of this song that grabs you.
See you when you get here - Lisa Mitchell (Song) [fic or art]
"How do you feel about being dead?"
said one to the other.
I think what I find most intriguing about this song is that it's a conversation between a living person and a dead person. How is this conversation happening? How are they communicating (through a mirror? Through some sort of communicating-with-the-dead device? Is there a ghost living under the bed, and the two characters just talk normally?) Do the two characters share history in some way, or do they happen to share the same living space (like a haunted house) or something else entirely? I really love the general idea of these two characters interacting with each other, whoever they may be. The song itself is quite light on detail, so there's a lot of room for character development/worldbuilding if that's your thing.
Trapeze - Patty Griffin (Song) [fic or art]
She started with us on the back of a horse
Just seventeen and already divorced
She took to the air with the greatest of ease
'Cause she was born to be gliding on the old trapeze
I'd love fic about the girl in this song. Feel free to take on any aspect of the song that grabs you, but if you want some prompts to get started: what happened in that previous marriage/how did her heart come to ache so badly? How did the events of her past lead her to the circus? She seems to have this mix of sadness and yearning ("some people want to know what it feels like to fly") and that could be really interesting to explore. What was this potion she drank, and how did it change her?
Or, I'd love fic about this circus in general. Are there other people working there who are just as broken? The chorus might possibly suggest something like that. It's so general ("some people don't care if they live or they die…"). Who's the Lady of the Snakes, what's her deal? Who's the narrator of the song ("she started with us on the back of a horse")?
Visually, I love all the circus images in this story, and I'd love to see something circus-y in an artwork.
Viva Forever - Spice Girls (Music Video) [fic only]
This video, man.
I think this might have been my first experience of a cracked-out music video. I always found it so intriguing, because it's this mix of melancholy and creepy and longing with a background of this bizarre fairytale about a kid getting trapped inside a rubix cube.
If you want to build a coherent narrative out of the events of this video, go for it! Although feel free to pick a individual piece of the story and explore it as an isolated thing, because it's quite an odd series of events, and building a coherent narrative might be really difficult! For example, what's happening to the boy in the rubix cube? Does he ever escape? Is it just darkness, or is it a world of its own? What's the story of the girl who runs away from the fairies, but watches from a distance and is too late to help him (and then is resigned to throwing him in the giant supermarket-toy-machine thing for some reason)?
Or maybe the events of the video aren't literal at all -- maybe the whole thing is a fantasy interpretation of non-fantasy events, but the POV character just prefers imagining these events as a fairytale with pretty and enticing (but ultimately malevolent) fairies. The lyrics of the song make me think maybe a young crush or relationship that ended in disappointment, or something like that? Or something else entirely!
Feel free to include the fairies to whatever level you're comfortable with (which might be ignoring them completely and focusing on a different part of the video, that would be fine!!) but I'd prefer them to not be written as the actual Spice Girls. Obviously the fairies' personalities are influenced by the personas that each of them played, and feel free to include elements of those personas if you want to include the fairies in the fic, but I'd prefer the fic to treat them as… well, as fairies. Not as the actual Spice Girls.
At the end of the day, this video is very confusing, and I am perfectly happy to read whatever it inspires you to write!
The End. Good luck, writer/artist! And have fun <3
