Crossovering 2017

Hello! Thank you so much for creating something for me – crossovers are one of my favourite things to read and write, this is one of my favourite exchanges, and I am very excited to receive any of the combinations in my signup.

This crazy monolith letter is hopefully going to be helpful? The main thing to keep in mind is that these are just ideas and jumping-off points. The great thing about crossovers is that there are so many amazing ideas out there that would never occur to me in a million years. Don’t be restricted by what I’ve written here! If you think of something completely different, go for it! Or if you start with one of my prompts but end up somewhere you didn’t expect, that’s cool too! I hope you have fun writing! <3

(Side note, by AO3 name is [archiveofourown.org profile] isquinnabel)

I’ve split this letter into three sections:
General Likes/DNWs
Fandom-Specific Likes/DNWs
Crossover-Specific Prompts.

General Info

General Likes

  • Hurt/comfort (both physical and emotional).
  • I love both angsty fic and joyful fic.
  • Whimsy.
  • Terrible circumstances creating tight bonds between people.
  • Or, terrible circumstances that isolate people.
  • All kinds of friendships e.g. lifelong best friends, belligerent/reluctant friendships, and everything in between.
  • Family dynamics, from chill and happy to dysfunctional and strained (and everything in between).
  • Found family
  • Groups, teams, pairs, individuals – all are good.
  • My preferences lean more gen than shippy, but there are some ships I really love (I’ll mention those in fandom-specific likes). In shippy fic, I love the hurt/comfort, kissing, UST, forced proximity, established relationships, casual intimacy.
  • Bizarre, cracky premises taken seriously.
  • I have a strong preference for third person narration, even if the source material is in first person.
  • Past and present tense are both fine.
  • I love worldbuilding.
  • I love both working out how the two worlds in a crossover combine, and I also love fic where it’s just taken for granted that the two worlds belong together. Whichever one fits the story you’re trying to tell sounds great.
  • Building a character’s backstory (or future) using the other canon

General DNWs

  • Explicit sex. I'm fine with sex happening, but I’d prefer no porny scenes or anything you'd need to warn for (e.g. noncon). If in doubt, a fade to black is fine!
  • Excessive gore. Canon-level violence is totally fine. (E.g. references to torture in a Hunger Games setting is fine, but I'd rather not be walked through the detail of the torture step-by-step.)
  • Parody
  • Character bashing

Fandom-specific info

Gilmore Girls
I love the whimsy of this show, and the intensity of the relationships. I love the dialogue of this show, the banter, the references. I love Stars Hollow, I love the townies, I love the festivals, I love the various stores and locations. I’m much more into the Gilmore family side of this show than the romance side – Lorelai & Rory, Lorelai & Emily, Rory & Richard, Rory & Emily, Lorelai & Richard. I would also really enjoy reading about basically any townie – Gil, Miss Patty, Gypsy, Babette, Morey, Sophie, anyone you like. I wasn’t super into the revival, so feel free to completely ignore it. But if you have an idea you’re really into that relies on the revival storylines, go for it!
DNW: Logan Huntzberger

Harry Potter
I love the big sprawling world and all the potential for worldbuilding in fic (eg inventing new spells or potions, wandmaking, what wizarding communities look like in other countries, magical creatures, magical plants, magical food, what the various jobs you hear about in canon actually involve e.g. law enforcement, cursebreaking, and so on). I love the Hogwarts ghosts. I love post-war fic or fic set during that final year at Hogwarts. I love muggleborns trying to balance the two worlds they belong to. I’m not particularly invested in any Harry Potter ships, I prefer the friendships, the teams, the found families – I love the close bonds people have in these books, especially after living through the war. Character-wise, I’m most interested in the generation that were Hogwarts students during the time the books were set, but anyone not in the DNWs is also fine!
DNW: the term “no-maj”, anything that relies on knowledge of anything but the seven books (I haven’t read Cursed Child or seen Fantastic Beasts, I need to get my act together), teacher/student ships, the Marauders, fic focussing on the next generation, rigid house stereotypes.

White Collar
I love Peter’s team. I love them as a group, and I love them as individuals – I love Peter, I love Neal, I love Diana, I love Jones. I love Elizabeth, I love Mozzie, I love Mozzie & Elizabeth, Mozzie & Peter, Mozzie & Neal. I love Sara. I love Alex. I really love the competence in this show. I love elaborate schemes and cons. I love unusual groups working together for a common goal (Burke’s Seven is one of my favourite episodes). I love when art stuff and/or forgery is woven in. I don’t necessarily need any references to technical things to be accurate. It’s not an area I know much about, so a halfway-convincing technobabble bluff is totally fine (but if it’s something you love researching, I’d also enjoy reading that woven in). Also, this is a show where I actually have ship preferences! I love Peter/Elizabeth and Neal/Sara, and would happily read anything ship-focussed about either.
DNW: Kate Moreau, Neal/Kate, Neal/Peter, Neal/Peter/El

Hunger Games
Both fandoms I’ve listed with Hunger Games I’ve signed up for fusions. I love Hunger Games fusions because of the world and the tropes that come with the Hunger Games universe. Putting characters from another canon into a Hunger Games setting is something that really draws me in – whether it’s in an arena, as Victors, as Capitol citizens, as rebel Capitol citizens, as district citizens – any of it fascinates me. Seeing how this major change in setting effects characters from the other canon, in what ways their different experiences have moulded them into a different person, in what ways they’re still recognisably the same person, how their relationships with others are influenced by this new setting… a Hunger Games setting is like an instant pressure cooker, and I love to see the impact this has on who characters are. I also love the opportunity for worldbuilding this provides (e.g. setting a fic in a District that isn’t shown much, like Ten or Six). Including characters from the Hunger Games canon is fine, but not necessary. Also, if you’re writing a fic in the Hunger Games universe, major character death is fine. Also I picked the books on my signup form, but I'm happy with using either book or movie settings/characterisation.
DNW: nothing I haven’t already listed in general DNWs.

Chronicles of Narnia
I love all the Friends of Narnia – the Pevensies, Polly and Digory, Eustace and Jill. I love how they grow so much when they visit Narnia, and how their minds and bodies remember and strengthen upon return to Narnia. I love the bonds they have with each other due to experiencing another world, whether they were there together or not. I love the various locations, whether they’re ones explored in the books or ones only briefly touched upon – the Eastern Sea and its various islands, the Wood Between the Worlds, Bism, the mermaid societies at the far east of the ocean, sentient stars, the mountain ranges of the sun… I love Uncle Andrew’s box of Atlantean dust. I love travelling and exploring in Narnia, and moving between worlds.
DNW: movie canon, Caspian/Susan, I’m happy for Peter to be part of the story but I’m not interested in him as a main character

Lost
I love both the mythology and the relationships. This is a great show for groups and teams – I love the groovy 70s Dharmaville group (whether they’re settled in Dharmaville or stuck in the time flashes), I love the post-canon era group where Hurley is learning how to do his job. I also love the 50s Jughead setting for conflict and tension. I love Sawyer/Juliet – I love them as a ship, and I love them as individual characters. Also very happy to read about Desmond/Penny. I love Richard Alpert, Hurley, Claire, Sayid, Desmond, Daniel, Charlotte… Honestly, don’t feel too restricted regarding characters. It’s such a huge cast, I’ll just forget to list people who I’d love to read about.
DNW: Jack/Kate, I’m happy for Jack or Miles to be part of the story but I’m not interested in either as a main character

Malory Towers
The canons I’m crossing over with Malory Towers are either magic or dystopia (Narnia, Harry Potter, and Hunger Games). I have a lot of nostalgic love for these books, and I’ve loved stories where groups of girls do cool shit my entire life (my childhood favourite was Fifth Formers, because of planning the pantomime). But even as a kid, there were things that bothered me, and I’d love to read fic that use this setting and/or these characters that have been in my life for so long but use them to tell a different story. I’d love to read about students at Malory Towers who don’t always feel at home, don’t always feel like they belong, don’t always feel like it’s the greatest place ever. Or I’d love to read about the characters in a different setting, one where they have to make tough decisions and morality is more grey.
DNW: nothing I haven’t already listed in general DNWs.

Baby-Sitters Club
I love these books so much. I love all the characters – I’m happy to read about any baby-sitter you wish, and I also love the characters in the Thomas-Brewer and Pike families. I’m also happy to read about characters from the Little Sister series. I love close friendships and families where characters can tease and laugh at each other and its fine, because that foundation of love and trust is there. Regarding aged-up fic, I love reading about adult versions of these characters who are recognisably the same person, but maybe didn’t end up exactly where their childhood self expected. I love reading about adult versions of these characters whose worlds have expanded, who’ve drifted away from some old friends and kept in touch with others, made new friends and/or enemies along the way, and built their adult life in a way that suits them.
DNW: Mary Anne/Logan as adults, parodies, caricatured versions of their futures (e.g. Kristy as dictator of the universe-type scenarios), fic where the premise is based entirely around a club reunion, chapter-two-esque recounts of what everyone is doing with their life now, first person narration.

Anne of Green Gables
These books are my happy place. I love Anne, the way she thinks, the way she speaks, the way she interacts with people, her intense attachments to people and places and things. I love how she sees magic everywhere. I love how the mundane realities of real life and adulthood don’t rob her of the things that make her Anne. I also love Matthew and Marilla – I love the different ways they express kindness, I love them as individuals, I love them as family to each other, and I love them as family to Anne. I love how these books deal with the little things that make up such a big part of life.
DNW: nothing I haven’t already listed in general DNWs.

SCP Foundation
I love eerie, unsettling horror. I love being scared. The SCP Foundation combines horror and humour in a way that works for me so well, and I’d really enjoy a fic that focussed on either (or both!). I love the idea of characters from other canons encountering SCPs out in the world. Or, I love the thought of another canon universe adding more to our understanding of an SCP. I’ve suggested specific SCPs in my prompts, but don’t feel restricted to those particular SCPs. If you think an SCP I haven’t listed would work well in a crossover, go for it!
DNW: already listed in general DNWs, but I don't like excessive gore. I like being scared, but I don't like being grossed out.

Prompts

Request 1 - Harry Potter/Gilmore Girls (crossover or fusion)
Both these canons have such a whimsical/absurd flair to them, crossing them over seems kind of natural. What if Harry-Potter-style magic existed in the Gilmore Girls universe? What if Stars Hollow was a wizarding town? Is the entire town magic? Just parts of it? Or is Richard and Emily’s world a magical community, but a different kind? Alternately, there are so many “Character A meets Character B” scenarios that would be really interesting. Who, from the HP universe, might move to Stars Hollow? Would they fit in beautifully, or would they be treated with suspicion?

Request 2 - Hunger Games/Gilmore Girls (fusion)
I love putting canons into a Hunger Games setting that have a very different tone. Putting Gilmore Girls characters into a world that’s so bleak is a big shift, and I love seeing how this changes/doesn’t change people. After having Rory, Lorelai was still young enough to be reaped – was she? Does she escape the arena? If she doesn’t, how does this change Rory’s upbringing? Or is Lorelai a Capitol runaway, looking for District Thirteen? Or is all of Stars Hollow transplanted into a district? How does this change everything?

Request 3 - Hunger Games/Malory Towers (fusion)
Another potential Hunger Games fusion. Maybe a straight-up arena setting would work well for this – how do the MT girls struggle in the arena? Who allies with who? Do any of them suit particular districts? Who makes it to the end? Are they proud or traumatized? Or, maybe an MT staff member is a victor, trying to keep her girls alive year after year. Or maybe some MT girls are victors in this same scenario. Or maybe they’re Capitol schoolgirls who couldn’t care less about the plight of the kids in the arena.

Request 4 - Harry Potter/White Collar/SCP Foundation (crossover or fusion)
Harry Potter/White Collar
A fusion in which the White Collar universe has Harry Potter magic would be really interesting. Does Peter’s team solve magical white collar crime? What sorts of crimes do they solve? Has someone forged a copy of a powerful magical item, like the Mirror of Erised? How does this change in setting change Neal’s crime history? How do he and Mozzie operate as wizards? Or, do only some characters have magic? Is Elizabeth a witch, and does Peter’s resulting knowledge of this whole other side of New York change how he sees his cases? Does Mozzie suspect anything? Alternately, a crossover would be amazing too. Does anyone from the HP universe work in international law enforcement now? Or does Sara’s sister’s disappearance have anything to do with the HP universe?

Harry Potter/SCP Foundation
How would a magical explanation change things? Does it make terrifying SCPs any less scary, or are they just as scary? Or more scary? Is the SCP Foundation in regular contact with the Ministry of Magic? Which ministry departments work with the SCP Foundation? The Unspeakables? The Aurors? The Improper Use of Magic Office? Would Arthur Weasley deal with them, working in Misuse of Muggle Artifacts? Are various SCPs taught as part of the Hogwarts curriculum? Is SCP-805 a magical creature? What role does it play in magical society? Is SCP-033 a known part of Arithmancy? Is SCP-701 studied as a cursed object/event of some kind? Do wizards refer to them as SCPs or do they have whole other names for them? Does the Hogwarts classroom setting inject some lighthearted silliness into an otherwise unnerving SCP, or is it still nightmare fuel?

White Collar/SCP Foundation
What would happen if the White Collar team encountered an SCP? Would SCP Foundation personnel take over the investigation? How much exposure do the White Collar characters have before this happens? What SCPs might they encounter? SCP-1074? SCP-472? Alternately, what if Neal (or Keller!) had a stint in D-class? Did he need to pull off a vanishing act to save he own life? If anyone can escape that damn face in SCP-087, it’s Neal.

Request 5 - Harry Potter/Malory Towers (crossover)
I’d love to read about a squib at Malory Towers. Whether it’s an existing Malory Towers character, a sibling of an existing Harry Potter character, either (or both!) sound great. How do they deal with keeping in touch with their family at home? Or their family at Hogwarts? How does their Hogwarts-based sibling manage? How do they explain their family to their friends at Malory Towers? Do they struggle with Malory Towers not being the life they envisaged for themselves? Do they feel distant from their family, or from other MT students? Or both? Or neither? Does Tom Riddle opening the Chamber of Secrets coincide with canon era Malory Towers?

Request 6 - Harry Potter/Lost/SCP Foundation (crossover)
Harry Potter/Lost
So much room for magic in this show! Does the wizarding world know about the island? Is it a super secret place that only Unspeakables know about? What business do Unspeakables have with the island? Did Voldemort pay a visit to the island when he was a young man, in search of a path to immortality? Were the Oceanic 6 unknowingly under constant auror protection, to keep dark wizards from torturing them for information on the island? Or, alternately, is it a ho-hum part of wizarding knowledge? Are semi-interested school students taught about it in class, or taken to the island via portkey to learn about its magical properties?

SCP Foundation/Lost
What does the Foundation know about the island? Are there any SCPs that might be found there, or tie into the island’s properties, or mythology, or history? Maybe SCP-169 has something to do with the island’s movement. Is the island itself an SCP? Or the smoke monster? Or the donkey wheel? What happened when SCP Foundation personnel came to the island to research these things?

SCP Foundation/Harry Potter
See Request 4.

Request 7 - Narnia/Lost (crossover)
What if the island was a pool in the Wood Between the Worlds? What if Polly and Digory went to the island instead of (or as well as) Charn? What if a Lost character found a way off the island that took them to the Wood? Or portals in general – what other ways are there to get between Narnia and the island? What if one (or more?) of the adult Pevensies joined the Dharma Initiative and moved to the island? Or Eustace or Jill? What’s their official job? Why are they there? Charlotte might be a good character to link the two canons – does she know anything about Narnia? What did her life involve between leaving the island as a child and returning as an adult? What did she discover while searching for the island? What about Uncle Andrew’s box of Atlantean dust? Is he wrong about it being from Atlantis? Is it actually tied to the island somehow?

Request 8 - Narnia/Malory Towers (crossover)
At the beginning of Prince Caspian, the Pevensies are on their way to boarding school (and it’s Lucy’s first term). What if Lucy and Susan started a term at Malory Towers fresh from a visit to Narnia? For Lucy, would it make starting boarding school easier or harder? What about for Susan? Is she the same Susan from Felicity Rivers’ form? Is Susan noticeably different after the events of Prince Caspian?

Request 9 - White Collar/Baby-Sitters Club (crossover)
I love unexpected futures for these girls, and I’d love to read about BSC characters fitting into the White Collar universe and what ties they might have to canon WC characters. E.g. maybe Claudia and Janine are an art forgery team, friends with Neal and/or Mozzie – Janine dealing with the chemical side of things, Claudia with the aesthetic side. Maybe Stacey is friends with Sara, or they work together in some capacity – they’re both so fabulous, I’d love to read about them as a team. Maybe Kristy or Stacey work with Elizabeth in event planning. Who might be a good fence, regularly working with Neal or Mozzie, or even Alex? Kristy, maybe? (Side note: I’m not as interested in a crossover in the opposite direction, i.e. White Collar characters in Stoneybrook. This is because my limited imagination can only picture a fic like that being a parody, which is one of my general DNWs. If you can write this without it being a parody, go for it!)

Request 10 - Anne of Green Gables/Harry Potter (crossover or fusion)
Anne of Green Gables plus magic… how does this work? Does Anne have magic? Did her uncontrolled childhood magic make her life before Green Gables even harder? How does her life change by going to Green Gables? Is she able to access magical education? If you want to worldbuild a magical education system for Canada, that sounds amazing. Or, what if Avonlea is a magical town? Is Anne the only one without magic? Is she okay with that, or does it bother her? Are the residents okay with a muggle outsider? How does this influence Anne’s later life? How does it influence the lives of her family? Or, what about the other way around? Who might an AOGG character be in the HP universe? Would Matthew take over Hagrid’s gamekeeping responsibilities while he’s away in OotP? Would Anne be a Hogwarts professor?

Thank you!
